ADNOC and 44.01 to scale up carbon-to-rock project

news agency wam , 9 Nov 2024 - 9:07

Emirates National Oil Company (ADNOC) and 44.01 announced that they plan to develop a carbon-to-rock project in the Emirate of Fujairah after a successful trial.

According to Amac News: Citing the announcement, this news was announced at the ADIPEC exhibition which is currently being held in Abu Dhabi.
An initial pilot of Earthshot's award-winning mineralization technology, 44.01, began in 2023 and permanently mineralized 10 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) in Fujairah's peridotite rocks in less than 100 days.
The Emirate of Fujairah was chosen for this experiment because of its peridotite rocks, which naturally react with CO2. On a large scale, peridotite mineralization could offset billions of tons of carbon emissions, helping to decarbonize vital industries and remove CO2 from the atmosphere.
ADNOC Chief Technology Officer Sophie Hildebrand said carbon sequestration is an important tool for reducing carbon emissions and achieving global climate goals.
As part of ADNOC's carbon management strategy, the company aims to reach 10 million tonnes of carbon sequestration capacity per year by 2030, equivalent to removing more than 2 million internal combustion vehicles from the road.
According to ADNOC, the company has started major carbon sequestration projects and increased its investment in carbon sequestration capacity to nearly 4 million tons per year.
