The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) has announced the launch of the first pearl farming project in freshwater oysters in the Al Faya region.

According to Amac News: The project, known as the Abu Dhabi Pearl Center expansion in Mirfa, was established in 2007 with the aim of cultivating local pearls and is now dedicated to cultivating new types of oysters in the emirate.
The new project includes an indoor irrigation facility with 10 units, capable of producing 10,000 oysters per year. The project also includes a quarantine section and research and administrative facilities.
According to the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, about 8,500 freshwater oysters have been produced in the project so far.
The Secretary-General of the organization, while emphasizing the importance of the Abu Dhabi Pearl Center as the first initiative in the Middle East to cultivate pearls in freshwater oysters, noted that the center supports studies and research in the field of sustainable oyster farming.
He added that with the success of cultivating local pearls at the Abu Dhabi Pearl Center, the necessary knowledge and expertise have been acquired to produce high-quality pearls in a sustainable manner.
The project cultivates Chinese and Indian oyster species, each of which can produce between 15 and 20 pearls of different shapes, sizes and colors.
Also, sustainability principles have been taken into account in the design of this project, and the water drained from the farming units is reused for irrigation, which contributes to environmental protection and water-saving efforts.
