Labor market in GCC countries grows

Data released by the GCC Statistics Center (GCC-Stat) show significant developments in the GCC common market, pointing to major developments in the workforce in both the public and private sectors of the GCC member states.


According to Amac News: Based on the GCC-Stat data, In 2023, the number of citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries who worked in the public sector of the member countries reached about 11.2 thousand people, which decreased from 12.2 thousand people in 2007. Instead, employment in the private sector for these citizens increased to 21.2 thousand people, which is more than 17.9 thousand people in 2007.
The data shows that in 2018, 4,000 citizens from other GCC countries were employed in the UAE public sector, an increase of 164.1% compared to 2007.
According to the GCC Statistics Center report, Omanis made up 86.4% of the workforce, followed by Bahrainis with 7.2% and other GCC nationals with 6.4%.
In 2021, the number of private sector workers of GCC nationals in the UAE will reach 9,000. Omanis were the majority in 2021 at 57.8%, followed by Saudis at 30% and other GCC nationals at 12.2%.
In Bahrain, in 2023, 535 citizens from other GCC countries were employed in the private sector, a decrease of 10.5% compared to 2007. Saudis were the majority at 71.8%, followed by Omanis at 21.5% and other GCC nationals at 6.7%.
In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in 2023, 13 citizens from other GCC countries were employed in the public sector, an increase of 8.3% compared to 2007. Kuwaitis were the majority at 46.2%, followed by Bahrainis at 38.5% and other GCC nationals at 15.3%.
Additionally, in 2023, 8,800 GCC nationals were employed in the Saudi private sector, an increase of 658.7% compared to 2007. Bahrainis were the majority at 48.8%, followed by Omanis at 25.4% and other GCC nationals at 25.8%.
In Oman, in 2023, 59 citizens from other GCC countries were working in the public sector, which is an increase of 47.5% compared to 2007. Emiratis constituted the majority at 39%, followed by Bahrainis at 32.2% and other GCC nationals at 28.8%.
 
However, in 2023, 39 citizens from other GCC countries were employed in Oman's private sector, a 24.3% decrease compared to 2007. Bahrainis were the majority at 53.4%, followed by Saudis at 27.5% and other GCC nationals at 19.1%.
In Qatar, the number of GCC citizens in the public sector will reach 1.1 thousand in 2023, a decrease of 18.8% compared to 2007. Omanis were the majority at 45.6%, followed by Saudis at 35.6% and other GCC nationals at 18.8%.
Employment in the private sector in Qatar reached 1.2 thousand people, which has increased by 131.2% compared to 2007. Saudis were the majority at 35.2%, followed by Bahrainis at 28.6% and other GCC nationals at 36.2%.
In Kuwait, the number of GCC citizens in the public sector will reach 5.8 thousand in 2023, a decrease of 38.1% compared to 2007. Saudis were the majority at 93.5%, followed by Omanis at 3.2% and other GCC nationals at 3.3%. In the private sector in 2023, the number of 1.5 thousand people were working, which has decreased by 90.3% compared to 2007. Saudis were the majority at 75.3%, followed by Bahrainis at 16.8%, Omanis at 7.3% and Emiratis at 0.6%.
The Cooperation Council's focus on facilitating the movement of labor between member states and promoting Gulf citizenship remains a priority, which has been reflected in the Supreme Council's decisions since 2000. Several ministerial committees have been formed to strengthen workforce integration in the region.
