The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) and Burjeel Holdings have entered into a strategic partnership to supply 22 Burjeel healthcare centers in Abu Dhabi with clean energy, verified through the issuance of Clean Energy Certificates (CECs).
According to
Amac News, CECs, issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), are the only recognized instruments in Abu Dhabi for tracing electricity from renewable and clean generation sources. They allow companies to verify their clean energy consumption and reduce their Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions.
This agreement marks a key milestone in Burjeel Holdings' journey toward carbon neutrality and underscores both organizations' commitment to sustainability and decarbonization.
Francois Brice, Executive Director of Commercial and Fuel Management at EWEC, stated that by reducing Scope 2 emissions from its medical facilities in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, Burjeel Holdings is taking a significant step toward incorporating clean energy into its operations. He noted that this agreement reflects the commitment of key industries to reduce their carbon footprint and aligns with the UAE's strategic initiative for net zero by 2050.
Brice added that EWEC is also dedicated to providing verified clean energy solutions for organizations across various sectors, reinforcing Abu Dhabi's position as a leader in sustainable energy adoption.
Omran Alkhoori, President of Business Development and Member of the Board of Directors at Burjeel Holdings, remarked that this partnership with EWEC is a pivotal step in their journey toward carbon neutrality. By integrating clean energy into their operations, they are reinforcing their commitment to environmentally responsible healthcare and contributing to the broader sustainability goals of the UAE.
EWEC is driving the adoption of the DoE's CEC scheme and helping various organizations accelerate their decarbonization processes. CECs, issued in one-megawatt-hour units, are tradable digital certificates that comply with the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard Foundation (I-REC Standard) and prove ownership of the environmental and economic benefits derived from clean energy consumption.
