In the opening ceremony of the Games, 6,800 athletes from 205 countries participated in 85 boats, which lasted more than three hours.
This ceremony was watched by 320,000 spectators from specially built stands on the banks of the Seine River and about 200,000 spectators from the balconies of nearby buildings.
This is the third time that the French capital will host the Olympic Games after 1900 and 1924. The last time Paris hosted the Olympic Games was a century ago in 1924.
A total of 329 sporting events will be held in 35 locations in the Ile-de-France region and other parts of France.
