The Abu Dhabi Business Women Council (ADBWC) announced that Emirati women make up 18% of entrepreneurs in the UAE, owning around 128,500 small and medium-sized enterprises and 135,000 projects.
Business license issuance to businesswomen in Abu Dhabi increases by 23%
According to Amac News: Asma Al Fahim, Chairwoman of the ADBWC, told the media that the number of business licenses issued to Emirati businesswomen in Abu Dhabi reached 27,331 by mid-2024, a 23% increase compared to 22,226 licenses in the same period in 2023.
She highlighted the UAE’s global progress in gender equality, saying that the country ranks seventh globally and first in the region in the UNDP Gender Equality Index for 2024, a jump from 49th place in 2015.
The UAE also scored 82.5 out of 100 in the World Bank’s 2023 Women, Business and the Law Report.
The UAE has recently introduced a new initiative to require at least one woman on the board of directors of private companies and 30 percent of women in private sector leadership by 2025. Al Fahim pointed to initiatives such as the Best Innovative and Creative Project Award, which promotes innovation and market expansion.
She also mentioned international partnerships that provide leadership training for Emirati women and enable them to compete globally.
