Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) has announced that the country has opened its fourth nuclear plant.
The UAE opened its fourth nuclear plant unit
According to Amac News: ENEC's announcement states that ENEC works to bring clean and abundant electricity to the UAE.
According to the announcement, Barakah is one of the most successful new nuclear projects in the last 30 years, representing an outstanding feat of engineering and teamwork and a remarkable achievement for the country.
This power plant has been delivered with the highest standards of safety, security and transparency in accordance with the 2008 commitments of the United Arab Emirates for the development of nuclear energy.
Barakah Power Station now produces 40 terawatt hours of electricity per year, which is roughly equivalent to New Zealand's annual electricity consumption and supplies up to 25% of the UAE's electricity.
This clean and carbon-free energy is enough to power 16 million electric cars annually. It is the largest decarburization effort in the UAE and the region, putting the country ahead of its 2030 climate commitments.
The 22.4 million tonnes of annual carbon emissions avoided by the pond plant is equivalent to removing 4.6 million cars from the road per year, helping to achieve 24% of the country's 2030 commitments for decarburization (Nationally Determined Contributions, known as NDCs).
The pond also offers extensive economic benefits. Despite growing demand, Abu Dhabi's natural gas consumption for electricity generation has reached its lowest level in 13 years, as Barakah now makes a significant contribution to Abu Dhabi's energy mix.
Barakah's four APR-1400 units also play a key role in helping Emirati companies decarbonize. 85% of the clean energy certificates managed by EWEC are funded by Barakah.
The construction of the dam has stimulated the creation of a new high-tech industry in the UAE, bolstering national studies in nuclear science and providing educational and training opportunities for talented young Emirati.
To date, more than 2,000 highly skilled Emiratis have participated in the development of the factory. This generation of knowledge and wisdom will be crucial for the future because, according to an International Monetary Fund study, nuclear power plants have a unique footprint and distribute wealth more widely than other energy sources.
During the construction phase alone, the delivery of the four units in Barakah generated $6.7 billion (Dh22.5 billion) in local procurement, making the UAE's peaceful nuclear energy program a major driver of domestic value.
As Unit 4 Barakah enters commercial operation, this vision has been realized, with one out of every four electrons in the UAE grid coming from Barakah, providing up to 25% of the UAE's electricity needs and the country as a leader in the civil nuclear field.
The Berke nuclear power plant presents a new model to the world, demonstrating that nuclear power is both cost-effective and can be delivered efficiently, with our units coming online within eight years from first concrete loading to fuel load and recovery. 40% of the schedule is overdue.
