The United Arab Emirates announced in a statement that it has joined the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy (Ocean Panel).
The UAE has joined the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy
According to Amac News: The UAE announcement states that this country is the first country in the MENA region to join this panel and was invited based on climate and biodiversity leadership.
The announcement was made on September 25 when world leaders and representatives of the panel's 18 other members gathered at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York City.
The Ocean Panel, established in 2018 and co-chaired by Norway and Palau, recognizes that the ocean, the world's largest ecosystem, is in a state of emergency due to climate change, pollution and overfishing.
Members commit to sustainably manage 100 percent of the ocean areas within their national jurisdictions and support a global goal of protecting 30 percent of the ocean by 2030.
As a member of the Ocean Panel, the UAE will draft and implement the Sustainable Ocean Panel. This panel could include measures such as marine spatial planning, integrated coastal management, creation of marine protected areas and strategic investments in emerging sectors.
The UAE will also host the UN Water Conference in 2026, which will include a review of developments and new declarations on ocean commitments.
