Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, the UAE's clean energy powerhouse, said in a statement that the green hydrogen pilot project has been completed.
Masdar announced the completion of the green hydrogen pilot project
According to Amac News: Masdar's announcement states that this project was completed in cooperation with EMSTEEL, the largest steel and construction Materials Company in the United Arab Emirates.
According to the announcement, the successful completion of this pilot project demonstrates the use of green hydrogen to produce green steel.
The Abu Dhabi-based pilot project, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region, uses green hydrogen to extract iron from iron ore, a key step in steel production.
The pilot project is now fully operational and has successfully started producing green steel.
The renewable hydrogen produced by this project has been certified by Avance Labs, the manager of the International Tracing Standard Foundation-certified hydrogen code, in accordance with the recently published ISO 19870 methodology for hydrogen.
The increasing global demand for green steel brings enormous growth potential for the UAE as it aspires to become a major green steel manufacturing hub.
The use of sustainable building materials, including steel, will be promoted through the National Green Certification Program launched by the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure in July 2024.
The partnership between Masdar and EMSTEEL has demonstrated the potential of green hydrogen to decarbonize the global steel value chain, while demonstrating how clean energy and heavy industry partners in the UAE are collaborating and taking urgent action to accelerate the energy transition.
Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, CEO of EMSTEEL Group, said that the UAE's current use of clean energy sources has reached more than 80 percent in 2023.
This pilot project is in line with Abu Dhabi's low-carbon hydrogen policy, which promotes low-carbon hydrogen as a clean energy source in the future.
The low-carbon hydrogen policy complements the UAE's national hydrogen strategy, which aims to position the UAE as a global producer of low-carbon hydrogen by 2031.
