The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) announced that it has signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement (SCA) with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to research and explore innovative energy solutions in line with the UAE’s energy diversification strategy.
ENEC and ADNOC sign strategic agreement to develop innovative nuclear energy solutions
According to Amac News: The agreement includes using ENEC’s expertise in evaluating the performance of technologies in pilot projects for a comprehensive technical and economic assessment to identify the best nuclear reactor technologies to suit ADNOC’s needs.
The agreement also includes a joint effort to explore the use of excess heat from the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi.
This will be achieved by conducting feasibility studies to assess opportunities for the use of excess heat and providing recommendations for advanced technologies that can be showcased through existing or future pilot projects.
Ali Al Rawhi, Senior Vice President of Technology and Innovation at ADNOC, said that in collaboration with ENEC, the company will explore the deployment of small modular nuclear reactors to develop innovative energy solutions to increase its operational efficiency.
The parties said that the collaboration is in line with the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to increase the share of clean energy sources and improve energy efficiency across the country.
The Barakah power plant, developed by ENEC, will produce 40 terabytes of energy annually, equivalent to 25 percent of the UAE’s electricity needs, and is transforming the country’s energy portfolio and contributing to a deep and timely decarbonization of the country’s electricity grid.
