ADQ, the UAE’s economic investment and development company, said it has entered into a partnership with Aqua Development, a Korean aquaculture startup, to explore the feasibility of land-based shrimp farming in the UAE’s climatic conditions through the development of a pilot facility.
According to Amac News: The half-hectare facility, co-financed by ADQ’s Growth Lab, is a community of innovators focused on identifying growth opportunities and creating value through innovation and research and development.
The facility will be located in the KEZAD Aquaculture Special Zone, which will provide specialized infrastructure, services and connectivity.
Under the terms of the agreement, ADQ and Aqua Development will evaluate the feasibility of land-based shrimp farming.
Aqua Development’s modular, nature-based solutions reduce costs and offer up to ten times greater productivity than traditional and modern systems.
Following the success of the pilot phase, production is expected to increase significantly, which could be a milestone in local shrimp production in the UAE.
Do Hyun Lee, CEO of Aqua Development, said that ADQ is leading the way in achieving important milestones in food security and sustainable food production in the UAE, and they are proud to contribute to this effort.
He added that they aim to work closely with ADQ and local stakeholders to replace a significant portion of seafood imports with local production and implement innovative, sustainable and cost-effective aquaculture solutions.
