The UAE media reported that genetic testing will be part of the mandatory pre-marital screening program in the country for all citizens planning to get married from January 2025.
Pre-marital genetic testing to be mandatory in UAE from 2025
According to Amac News: The plan was approved by the UAE Genome Council at the country’s annual government meetings, according to the state-run Gulf Times.
While pre-marital medical examinations for couples, both citizens and expatriates, were previously mandatory in the UAE, genetic testing was optional.
The Gulf Times quoted a senior official as saying that the genetic test identifies more than 570 genetic mutations, which can lead to hereditary diseases such as cardiomyopathy, genetic epilepsy, spinal muscular atrophy, hearing loss, cystic fibrosis and “other severe and chronic diseases that are difficult to treat.”
The strategy aims to create an integrated national genetic database that will help proactively identify genetic diseases among Emiratis and facilitate early medical intervention. The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention said it will use future technologies to ensure sustainable development and improve the quality of life, in line with the UAE's Centennial Vision 2071.
