The National Center for Meteorology of the UAE (NCM) announced that together with the Bulgarian Institute of Polar Research, it completed its first joint scientific expedition to Antarctica on January 5, 2025.
UAE participates in first joint scientific expedition to South Pole
According to Amac News: This center called this issue a unique achievement and considered it as an indication of the UAE's commitment to strengthening international cooperation in the fields of meteorology and climate science.
In this mission, two Emirati experts in the field of meteorology and seismology, Ahmed Al Kaabi and Badr Al Amiri, participated and underwent intensive training to face the harsh conditions of scientific missions in polar regions.
Preparation for this mission included months of physical and technical training.
As part of the tasks assigned to the experts, two meteorological and seismographic monitoring stations will be installed. These stations will help collect vital data about weather patterns and seismic activity in the polar region.
This information will influence the support of NCM projects and help develop more accurate numerical prediction models and earthquake monitoring. Also, media documentation and filming of the discovery will be done using virtual reality technologies.
The purpose of this mission is to research climate change, atmospheric composition and polar meteorology, which contributes to the global understanding of the role of Antarctica in regulating the Earth's climate.
Abdullah Al Mandus, Director General of NCM and President of the World Meteorological Organization, said: "This scientific expedition to Antarctica is an important step in enhancing the UAE's reputation as a global center for scientific research in Meteorology and Climate."
He added that this collaboration with the Bulgarian Institute shows the UAE's commitment to active participation with the international community to increase knowledge and develop scientific solutions to climate challenges.
