According to
Amac News, The decision is in line with Cabinet Resolution No. 85 of 2023 and Ministerial Resolution No. 43 of 2024 issued by the UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, which refers to the discontinuation of the use of the gallon-ampere (IG) unit in water meters across the UAE.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, CEO and Director of DEWA, said that the adoption of the cubic meter as a uniform and universal unit of measurement, instead of the gallon-ampere, is an important step towards improving alignment with international best practices.
The current smart meters installed for customers are already compatible with the cubic meter measurement system, so there will be no need to change customers’ meters.
To ensure a smooth and seamless transition, DEWA will henceforth display both units (cubic meters and gallons) on water bills and customer dashboards to begin preparations for the final adoption of the new unit. The final adoption of this new unit will be effective from the March 2025 billing cycle and customers will be informed of the change through official communication channels.
