China launches its first deep-ocean drilling vessel
According to Amac News: Based on the report by the China Daily newspaper, this event is considered a great development for China in the field of exploration and extraction of resources in the deep seas.
According to China Daily, the massive ship was mainly designed by China Maritime Design and Research Institute in Shanghai and built by Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company in Guangzhou.
Both entities are part of the state-owned China Shipbuilding Corporation, the world's largest shipbuilder.
The construction of this ship started in November 2021 and ended in December 2023. This ship has been commissioned after several sea trials.
The ship is 179.8 meters long and 32.8 meters wide and displaces 42,600 tons of water. The ship can travel about 27,800 km and sustain itself for 120 days without needing to refuel. A typical scientific expedition can accommodate 180 sailors and researchers.
This ship is capable of operating in all oceans except polar regions and can drill tectonic plates up to 11,000 meters under the sea.
According to the source, the ship is equipped with the most advanced drilling system in the world and has four drilling modes depending on its specific tasks.
An area of more than 3,000 square meters on the ship is dedicated to nine laboratories in various fields such as basic geology, palamagnetism, organic geochemistry, microbiology, geophysics and drilling technology.
The main user of this ship is the China Geological Survey under the supervision of the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The vessel is expected to strengthen China's capabilities in deep-sea resource exploration and help develop key technologies and equipment, as well as serve global scientific efforts in ocean drilling.
