Abdul Mehri, of the Natural Disasters Agency, said a joint team of police, army and search and rescue forces had been dispatched to the area to evacuate residents of nearby villages.
Images released by Indonesia's volcanology agency showed Mount Ibo erupting on Saturday evening, sending ash 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) into the air.
The agency did not provide any information on how many people have been evacuated, but said a seven-kilometer radius of the volcano had been cleared.
Indonesia's volcanology agency raised the volcano's alert level to the highest on Thursday after Ibo erupted several times earlier this month.
Ibo's activity follows a series of volcanic eruptions in Indonesia, which is located on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and has 127 active volcanoes.
Flash floods and cold lava flows from Mount Marapi, one of the most active mountains in West Sumatra province, followed torrential rain on May 11 in several nearby areas, killing more than 60 people.
In recent weeks, North Sulawesi's Ruwang volcano has also erupted, spewing lava flows. The eruption prompted authorities to evacuate more than 12,000 people to a nearby island.
