On the occasion of World Clean Energy Day, Nawal Al-Hassouni, the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), said that his country continues to promote global investment in clean energy projects through strategic partnerships and financial platforms and solutions.
UAE strengthens its role in advancing clean energy
According to Amac News: Earlier this year, the country launched the world’s first “gigascale” solar and battery storage project in Abu Dhabi, which will generate 1 gigawatt of electricity per day, according to UAE media.
The UAE said it is looking to increase its clean energy production capacity with new projects such as the Al-Juben stand-alone solar project, which is expected to be operational by the third quarter of 2026 and will generate 1.5 gigawatts of electricity.
The project will help reduce more than 2.4 million tons of greenhouse gases per year.
The country also has three of the world’s largest solar power plants and aims to achieve a capacity of 14.2 gigawatts of clean energy by 2030.
The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant has so far generated nearly 88,000 gigawatt hours of electricity, playing a significant role in reducing carbon emissions.
In the past six years, the UAE has added more clean electricity per capita than any other country.
The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company is also exploring new opportunities in advanced nuclear technologies and clean energy sources such as hydrogen, and is working to establish a regional hub and supply chain for nuclear energy.
World Clean Energy Day, celebrated annually on January 26, highlights the importance of future energy that helps protect the environment and its resources, and highlights sustainable development, job creation and strengthening business sectors.
