The United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a statement of the occurrence of seven major storms in the North Atlantic Ocean in 2024.

Typically, an average year sees 14 named storms with winds of more than 65 kilometers (40 miles) per hour, the organization said.
17 to 25 storms are expected this year, with four to seven potentially becoming major hurricanes, characterized by winds of at least 178 kilometers (111 miles) per hour, the agency said in a statement. The usual average is three major hurricanes per year.
It only takes one storm making landfall to set back years of socio-economic development, said Co-Bart, deputy secretary-general of the World Trade Organization.
The projected above-average hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, is attributed to ocean warming and the projected development of the La Niña weather phenomenon, which will lead to significant cooling of waters.
