Afghan government seeks participation in international climate change meetings
According to Amac News: Matiul Haq Khalis, Director General of the department, raised this issue in a press conference held today, Sunday, December 1, at the Afghan government media center.
He stated that the Afghan interim government delegation at the 29th Global Climate Change Conference (COP29) sought interaction, coordination, and cooperation in the field of combating climate change and active participation in these meetings.
He also referred to the discussions held on Afghanistan’s vulnerabilities to climate change and said that the interim government delegation emphasized the resumption of suspended environmental and climate change projects.
Khalis added: “In this meeting, we tried to convince the international community that the issue of climate change and the environment should not be related to politics and should be considered as a social and humanitarian problem.”
On the other hand, Ruhollah Amin, head of the agency's climate change department, said that Afghanistan needs $20.6 billion in financial assistance by 2030 to combat climate change. The 29th Climate Change Conference was hosted by Azerbaijan and was attended by delegations from Afghanistan and more than 200 countries and continued until November 22.
