According to Amac News: Four out of every five families in rural Afghanistan are in debt to provide food, according to a report released by the World Food Program on Sunday.6
The average household debt in Afghanistan for food is 38,200 afghanis, equivalent to $560, the report said.
The World Food Program says that given the current situation, a large number of needy families in Afghanistan will not receive assistance from the organization in the coming months due to lack of funds.
The economic situation for poor families in Afghanistan has "worsened" since the caretaker government came to power, the report said.
The World Food Program says it plans to support 6 million people in Afghanistan in the coming months by providing cash and food aid; but this is less than half of those in need of humanitarian assistance.
The World Food Program said in its October report that 23.7 million people in Afghanistan were in need of humanitarian assistance, of which 12.4 million were at the "acute" level of food insecurity.
According to the World Food Program, in the first half of 2024, the organization was only able to provide life-saving food aid to 1 million people a month, while 11 million people in need were deprived of it.
The organization says it needs $680 million over the next six months to help the most vulnerable food insecure families across Afghanistan survive the winter.
